3 Common Salon Problems and their Solutions
As a salon owner, you will face your fair share of challenges while working in the competitive beauty industry. What differentiates you as a smart salon owner from the rest though is how they you go about solving those problems.
Three Salon Issues and How Managers solve them
There are many components involved in running a beauty salon. However, the most common problems are usually related to the following three facets of the business:
- Staff management and motivation
- Retaining existing clients
- Marketing your salon to bring in new customers
Staff Management and Motivation
Staff management can become difficult, especially since professionals in the beauty industry would be more inclined to build their own business, rather than work for yours. The trick here is to involve them with your business in such a way that your goals become theirs.
Deal with absenteeism effectively and avoid aggression and confrontation when dealing with issues. Remember the human factor of your business and treat your staff respectfully. Teach them about the business and train them on selling retail merchandise. Dedicate personal work goals for each member of the staff and always be willing to take suggestions.
Retaining Existing Clients
There are three main issues that arise when we talk about customer retention:
- Staff not re-booking customers
- Offering prices that compete with home services
- Offering prices that are comparatively cheaper than that of the competition
Offering discounts and freebies is one way to solve these issues, but it’s not always lucrative.
If lowering prices is not an option, go with referral programs and holiday-targeted deals. Offer full-price but provide more services.
In other words, add the wow factor. For example, if you’re running a hair salon, target your marketing strategies on the wide variety of services you offer. Connect them to the services customers usually ask for during those specific days, and throw in a discount for good measure. Reward your older clients with special access to products and services. Make them feel loved and rewarded. And as always, maintain quality of service.
Marketing to New Clients
Social media is one of the best tools for bringing in new clients. But you must know how to use it well. Don’t use the same marketing tactics of offering discounts in your immediate area. Broaden your target market (and number of social media platforms), and connect with more people. Let people know that you’re offering unique services and encourage customers to leave reviews on Facebook, Yelp and Twitter.
Maintain a presence online so people are aware of your business. Run special offers and host competitions. Get people involved in showing off your services. This will give you free promotion.
